B2B SEO: How to Rank When Your Buyers Are a Committee (2026)

B2B SEO

Quick answer

B2B SEO is search optimisation for a purchase that one person researches, several people approve, and nobody makes quickly.

The mechanics are the same as any SEO: technical health, content, authority. What changes is the target. In B2B, the keyword with 50 searches a month can be worth more than the one with 5,000, because those 50 searches come from people who are evaluating vendors right now.

Three findings from current research shape everything below:

  • Gartner’s survey of 646 B2B buyers, conducted in August and September 2025, found 67% prefer a rep-free buying experience.
  • The 6sense 2025 Buyer Experience Report, based on nearly 4,000 responses, found buyers make first contact with sellers at about 61% of the way through their buying process, and that the vendor contacted first wins around 8 out of 10 deals.
  • Forrester’s State of Business Buying 2026, drawing on nearly 18,000 business buyers, reports an average of 13 internal stakeholders and nine external participants influencing a decision.

Put together: most of the evaluation happens on your website before anyone speaks to you, and the shortlist is set before your sales team knows the deal exists. SEO is how you get onto that shortlist.

How B2B search differs from B2C

B2B

B2C

Search volume on money terms

Low, often 10 to 200 a month in Singapore

High

Value per conversion

High, often recurring

Lower, transactional

Who searches

Researcher, not always the decision maker

The buyer

Time from first search to purchase

Months. 6sense put the average buying cycle at 10.1 months in 2025

Minutes to weeks

What content must do

Arm an internal champion to convince others

Persuade one person to act now

Conversion event

Enquiry, demo, quote, download

Purchase

Measurement

Pipeline and closed revenue, months later

Revenue this week

The practical consequence: a B2B SEO report showing traffic growth means little. A report showing which pages produced qualified enquiries, and what those turned into, is the only version worth reading.

Step 1: Target the searches that carry intent, not volume

Build the keyword list in this order. The first group is where the money is, even though the volumes look small.

Priority

Search type

Example

Why

1

Vendor and service

“b2b seo agency”, “erp implementation singapore”

Actively shopping

2

Comparison

“netsuite vs sap”, “[competitor] alternative”

Shortlisting now

3

Pricing

“warehouse management system cost”

Budgeting, high intent

4

Problem-aware

“reduce picking errors warehouse”

Early, but you shape the criteria

5

Integration and compatibility

“xero integration for manufacturing”

Specific, often ignored by competitors

6

Category education

“what is warehouse automation”

Wide, weak intent, useful for authority

Most B2B sites do this backwards, publishing category education first because it has the most volume, then wondering why traffic does not convert.

On comparison and alternative pages: these are the highest-converting pages most B2B companies never build. Buyers evaluating three vendors search exactly this way. If you do not publish the comparison, a third-party listicle does it for you, and they control the framing.

The 95-5 rule, used properly

Professor John Dawes of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, writing for the LinkedIn B2B Institute in 2021, argued that “up to 95% of business clients are not in the market for many goods and services at any one time.” He is explicit that this is a heuristic rather than a measured constant.

The point stands for keyword planning: bottom-funnel pages capture the small in-market group, while educational content and brand presence build recognition for the much larger group who will buy later. You need both, and you should build the bottom-funnel pages first because they pay for the rest.

Step 2: Build the page architecture B2B buyers need

A B2B site needs more page types than a B2C site, because different stakeholders ask different questions.

Page type

Who it serves

What it must contain

Service or solution pages

The researcher

What it does, who it suits, how it works, what it costs or how pricing works

Industry pages

The champion

Sector-specific language, regulations, and named examples

Use case pages

The end user

The specific job it solves, in their words

Comparison pages

The shortlister

Honest differences, including where you are not the right fit

Case studies

Everyone, especially finance

Named client where possible, the problem, the numbers

Pricing or pricing logic

Finance and procurement

Real ranges, or the variables that set the price

Integration pages

IT

What it connects to, how, and what it needs

Security and compliance

IT and legal

Data handling, PDPA, certifications

Resources

The champion

Templates, checklists and calculators they can forward internally

The document nobody builds: something the internal champion can send to their boss. A one-page summary, a business case template, a ROI calculator. With 13 internal stakeholders involved on average, the person who likes you has to sell you internally when you are not in the room.

Gartner also found that 69% of buyers noticed inconsistencies between what a supplier’s website said and what its sellers told them. Align the two before you spend on traffic.

Step 3: Get the technical basics out of the way

B2B sites fail technically in predictable ways:

  • JavaScript-rendered content. Network testing published by Vercel and MERJ in December 2024 found the major AI crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, ByteDance and Perplexity do not execute JavaScript. If your product pages only render client-side, AI search cannot read them. Check with view source.
  • Everything gated. If the only version of your content sits behind a form, search engines see the form, not the content. Publish the substance, gate the extras such as templates and data sets.
  • Thin service pages. Many B2B sites have one page per service with 200 words, then a blog with 300 posts. Invert that.
  • Dead case studies. Published once, never updated, with no numbers.
  • Duplicate industry pages. The same paragraph with the industry name swapped, which Google treats as thin content.
  • No structured data. Organisation, Service and Article markup help machines understand who you are.

See technical SEO explained for the full list.

Step 4: Build authority the way B2B actually works

B2B link building rarely comes from guest posts. It comes from the relationships you already have:

  • Industry associations and chambers. Membership directories, event listings, committee pages.
  • Suppliers and partners. Partner directories, integration listings, joint case studies.
  • Clients. Their case studies, their supplier pages, their press releases.
  • Original data. A benchmark survey of your sector, published annually, gets cited for years.
  • Expert commentary. Trade publications need quotes on regulation and market changes.
  • Speaking and events. Conference pages, webinar partners, training providers.

Our guide to what makes a good backlink covers how to judge each opportunity, and why bought link packages are a liability for a B2B brand.

Step 5: Show up in AI answers, because your buyers use them

Forrester found that 94% of business buyers used AI during their buying process, and Gartner found 69% of buyers prefer to validate AI-generated insights with a sales rep. That means AI is shaping the shortlist, then a human checks the work.

What this changes for B2B SEO:

  • Content must be specific enough to quote: prices, timelines, integrations, limitations.
  • Comparison pages get cited, because that is what buyers ask assistants for.
  • Your content must exist in the HTML, not after JavaScript.
  • Consistency matters across your site, LinkedIn, directories and review platforms, because AI answers assemble from multiple sources.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity what your buyers would ask, note who gets cited, and work from there. Our AI search readiness audit covers the checks.

Step 6: Measure against pipeline, not traffic

Metric

Why it matters in B2B

Qualified enquiries by landing page

Which pages produce real opportunities

Pipeline value from organic

The number your management actually cares about

Cost per qualified lead

Compares SEO against paid search honestly

Assisted conversions

B2B buyers read several pages over weeks

Branded search volume over time

The clearest sign awareness work is landing

Share of the shortlist

Whether you appear for comparison searches

Set up the plumbing first. Connect form submissions to your CRM with the landing page attached, so you can report on which page produced a deal six months later. Without that, you will be reporting rankings forever.

A realistic first 90 days

Weeks

Focus

Output

1 to 2

Audit and mapping

Technical audit, keyword map by buying stage, competitor comparison, CRM tracking check

2 to 4

Fix and consolidate

Technical blockers, duplicate or thin pages merged, service pages deepened

4 to 8

Build the money pages

Solution, pricing logic, comparison and integration pages

6 to 12

Proof and authority

Case studies with numbers, association and partner links, first original data piece

Ongoing

Measure

Enquiries and pipeline by page, monthly

Expect early wins on long-tail and comparison searches within two to three months, and movement on category terms in six to twelve.

The Singapore context

Singapore is an SME market: SingStat data for 2025 shows 369,500 of 371,000 enterprises were SMEs, around 99.6%, employing roughly 2.49 million of 3.6 million workers. For most B2B sellers here, that means your buyer is an owner or a small team, not a 13-person committee, and the cycle is shorter than global benchmarks suggest.

It also means search volumes are small. A term with 50 searches a month in Singapore can carry more pipeline than a 5,000-volume term in a market you do not serve. Check the country data before dismissing a keyword.

Grants: the Productivity Solutions Grant closes to new applications on 29 September 2026, together with EDG and MRA. From 30 September 2026, Enterprise Singapore’s EDGE Grant applies, with up to 70% support for SMEs and up to 50% for non-SMEs depending on the activity, capped at S$100,000 per company per year. Check which activity covers your scope before committing.

Common B2B SEO mistakes

  • Publishing educational content first because it has the volume
  • No comparison or alternative pages, leaving the framing to third parties
  • Pricing hidden entirely, when finance is a decision maker in more than half of purchases
  • Case studies with no numbers and no named client
  • Gating everything, so search engines see forms instead of content
  • Reporting traffic and rankings to a board that thinks in pipeline
  • Ignoring the internal champion who has to sell you upstairs
  • Chasing global keyword volumes that do not exist in your market

Frequently asked questions

What is B2B SEO?

Search optimisation for businesses selling to other businesses, where search volumes are lower, buying cycles run for months, and several people influence the decision.

How is B2B SEO different from B2C SEO?

The technical work is the same. The difference is targeting low-volume high-intent searches, building content for a buying group rather than one person, and measuring pipeline instead of transactions.

How long does B2B SEO take to work?

Long-tail and comparison searches can move in two to three months. Category terms usually take six to twelve. The sales cycle then adds its own delay before revenue appears.

Which keywords should a B2B company target first?

Vendor and service searches, then comparison and alternative searches, then pricing. Educational content comes after those are built.

Should B2B companies publish pricing?

Publish either real ranges or the variables that determine price. With procurement involved in more than half of purchases, a page with no pricing signal gets filtered out early.

Does content marketing still work for B2B?

Yes, when it serves the buying group rather than a keyword. Templates, calculators and comparison content that a champion can forward internally do more than another definition article.

How do I prove SEO is working to management?

Connect forms to your CRM with the landing page attached, then report qualified enquiries and pipeline by page. Rankings alone will not survive a board meeting.

Is LinkedIn better than SEO for B2B?

They do different jobs. LinkedIn reaches people who are not searching yet. SEO captures people who are actively evaluating. See our LinkedIn Ads for B2B guide.
